The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) will be amending a surcharge for loaded crude oil tankers to 25% above its usual transit dues, with empty crude oil tankers surcharge increasing to 15%, explained a statement from SCA.

The amendments will be effective April 1st, SCA wrote, adding that the additional fees are temporary and can be modified or canceled according to the changes in the maritime transport market.

SCA previously announced in September 2022 that it would raise transit prices to balance out increased energy prices, freight rates, and daily tanker time-charter rates.

“Raising transit tolls is a necessity to face the impact of the current global inflation on the increased cost of navigational services in the canal,” said Suez Canal Authority chairman Osama Rabie when it was first announced that SCA would be increasing prices.

On a different occasion, the SCA head projected that Suez Canal revenues would jump by 15% to hit a record $8 billion in the current fiscal year.

Earlier this week, shipping company, Maersk, filed a lawsuit against rival Evergreen over losses suffered due to its 400-meter vessel, the Ever Given, causing a 6-day shutdown of the canal in 2021.
