Egypt begins 3rd phase of developing the fixed internet infrastructure| MCITMin

The 3rd phase will target 4,500 villages included in the presidential initiative "Hayat Karima" with internet services within three years

Egypt began the 3rd phase of its development strategy in further developing the country’s internet infrastructure, announced Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat.

The minister added that the ministry has contracted a global consulting firm to set up the 3rd phase’s features of upgrading the fixed internet in Egypt, noting that the 1st and 2nd phases cost around $1 billion.

The 3rd phase will target 4,500 villages included in the presidential initiative "Hayat Karima" with internet services within three years.

During his speech GITEX Global, the minister stated that all African countries, including Egypt, face the same challenges, and have plenty of opportunities and ambition to achieve the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which aims to improve the standard of living of the continent’s citizens.

Pointing out several factors and opportunities that the African continent can use to achieve its vision, the minister noted the development of the communications infrastructure and provision of internet services at reasonable prices, while developing its legislative and regulatory framework.

Talaat explained that Egypt's participation in GITEX Global is aimed at attracting global technology companies that are seeking to inject foreign direct investments into the Egyptian market. By investing in Egypt, companies would be able to benefit from the tremendous technological boom in the country and get acquainted with the promising investment opportunities.

According to Talaat, Egypt’s communications and information technology sector is the country’s fastest growing sector, with a growth rate of 16%.

Egypt’s efforts in developing the communications infrastructure contributed to Egypt’s ability to challenge the negative effects of the pandemic, he pointed out.

Talaat also highlighted that Egypt hosts several data centers to serve local, regional and global markets, alongside the government’s regulatory efforts to support the country’s digital needs.

This includes the law of electronic signatures, intellectual property, information technology crimes, personal data protection, and the anticipated e-commerce law. The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) also approved the regulatory framework for establishing data centers and providing cloud computing services.
