Egypt plans to double the monthly data allowance of its basic fixed internet package to 100 gigabytes (GB), from 50GB currently, while keeping its price unchanged, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Saturday.

Speaking during the closing session of Egypt Forum 2026, Madbouly said the government is targeting the increase without changing the current price. He did not specify when the measure would take effect or provide details on its implementation.

The proposed increase comes as demand for internet services grows in Egypt. Fixed internet usage rose 36% year-on-year in 2026, with one million new users added, according to data from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA).

The growth reflects rising demand for connectivity and data transmission as households and businesses increasingly rely on digital services, underscoring the need to expand network infrastructure and improve service quality.

In May 2026, the NTRA approved price adjustments of between 9% and 15%, including taxes, for some telecommunications and internet packages. The changes also introduced a new fixed internet package priced at EGP 150, replacing the previous lowest-priced package at EGP 210, as part of measures aimed at supporting digital inclusion.

The regulator attributed the adjustments to higher operating and investment costs, including electricity, fuel, labour, network construction and electronic equipment, as well as supply-chain disruptions.

It said the changes were intended to help telecommunications companies sustain investment in infrastructure upgrades and improve service quality.

Madbouly’s announcement did not clarify whether the proposed increase in the basic data allowance would apply to all telecommunications operators in Egypt or require regulatory or commercial changes before implementation.
