With a fresh influx of tourists, Egypt’s tourism sector is expected to see revenues of between $6 billion to $9 billion at the end of the year as Eastern European and Gulf tourists go on holiday.

Tourism minister Khaled El Anani, during a tourism conference in Riyadh, said that Egypt is hoping for a total of more than 6 million tourists this year as in-bound tourist numbers rise.

El Anani had recently announced a targeted revenues of $8 billion earlier this month, noting that monthly tourist numbers to more than 500 thousand last April.

In a January interview, the minister sated that tourism revenue dropped to about $4 billion in 2020 from $13 billion the year before, seeing around a 60 percent YoY drop in Q1 2021.

El Anani has previously stated that Egypt could reach pre-pandemic tourism levels by the second half of the year, as long as their tourism sector-wide vaccination program maintains its projected pace.

During the conference, the minister also mentioned that the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza currently still expected to open this year, however a delay is still in the cards.
