The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has adopted a new regulatory framework for establishing data centers in Egypt, supporting Egypt’s positioning as a future data center hub for the region.

Announced over the weekend, the regulatory framework was prepared to serve as a tool for organizing and facilitating work procedures.

“The said framework was also set to provide the investment facilitations necessary for this scope. It is worth noting that such a framework aims to polarize giant data centers to invest in Egypt’s market, in an attempt to have more investments in cloud computing and e-content services,” wrote NTRA in an official statement.

Already providing over 80% of data traffic moving between Europe and Asia, in addition to being an internet submarine cable hub, Egypt is a great candidate to become an international data center hub. It also is part of the 2Africa consortium, with 17 cables transiting through the country.

The NTRA’s new framework aligns with Egypt’s strategy to promote national digital transformation, attracting more investments into the sector, and using its natural geographical advantage to strengthen its strategic position as a regional and global focal point in regards to data traffic and a gateway between Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Asia.

It also aims to use the framework to increase job opportunities, and improve electronic services provided to citizens through faster and easier access to electronic transactions and content hosted within Egyptian data centers.
