Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly led a high-level meeting to assess Egypt’s ongoing digital transformation agenda and the latest efforts to attract increased investment into the country’s rapidly expanding information and communications technology (ICT) sector on Tuesday.
The meeting comes amid strong momentum in Egypt’s ICT sector, which has seen annual growth exceeding 16%, making it one of the country's fastest-growing industries. Its contribution to GDP has climbed to 5.8%, up from just 3.2% in 2014, reflecting the sector’s expanding role in the national economy.
Held at the government’s headquarters in New Alamein, the meeting brought together Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat and Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, along with senior officials from the National Telecom Regulatory Authority, Telecom Egypt, and the Planning Ministry.
A cabinet statement confirmed that the discussions centered on aligning the two ministries’ joint efforts to accelerate digital transformation across state institutions, improve ICT infrastructure, and position Egypt as a competitive destination for global tech investors.
Egypt has also made significant strides in international rankings, now leading the African continent in fixed internet speed and jumping 49 positions in the global Government AI Readiness Index since 2019.
Officials highlighted ongoing efforts to boost digital skills nationwide, with a 25-fold increase in budget allocations for training programs between FY2018/2019 and FY2023/2024. The number of trainees soared from 4,000 to nearly 400,000, reflecting a major investment in capacity-building to support Egypt’s digital workforce.
Supporting startups and entrepreneurs was also a major theme. The government aims to create a more innovation-friendly environment for digital businesses and promote entrepreneurship across urban and rural regions alike. This includes specialized training programs, partnerships with international tech leaders, and broader efforts to build a sustainable ecosystem for digital innovation.
The meeting also addressed ways to strengthen Egypt’s international cooperation in the tech space by expanding collaboration with global partners, development institutions, and international organizations—particularly in the areas of AI, e-government, and ICT-enabled development.
Egypt’s outsourcing and business services sector is also flourishing. Today, more than 145,000 professionals are employed across 195 outsourcing centers, serving over 175 international clients with a broad array of digital services.
Digital platforms are also seeing wide adoption. The state-run “Digital Egypt” platform has registered over 8 million users, while a growing number of AI-driven projects are being implemented in sectors such as healthcare and public services.
Prime Minister Madbouly reiterated the state’s commitment to pushing forward digital transformation as a pillar of economic development and global competitiveness.
