Chevron has announced that the Aphrodite gas field project in Cyprus has entered the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase, paving the way for natural gas exports to Egypt through its existing infrastructure.
Javier La Rosa, Chevron’s President of Base Assets and Emerging Countries, made the announcement on Tuesday during the Mediterranean Petroleum Conference and Exhibition in Alexandria.
La Rosa highlighted Egypt’s clear vision and leading role in the region, emphasizing that its advanced infrastructure and strong domestic demand provide a solid foundation for maximizing the value of new gas discoveries.
He added that ongoing cooperation between Egypt and Cyprus is playing a key role in advancing the development of the Aphrodite gas field, in which Chevron is a major partner.
La Rosa stressed that transforming the Mediterranean region’s estimated 44 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources into sustainable growth requires continued exploration, strong partnerships with governments, fair regulatory frameworks, and optimal utilization of existing infrastructure, particularly Egypt’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities.
Discovered in 2011 off the coast of Cyprus, the Aphrodite gas field is planned to be connected to Egypt’s national gas network through an approximately 280-kilometer offshore pipeline.
The project aims to utilize the field’s estimated reserves of 3.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to meet Egypt’s domestic demand, while also enabling gas liquefaction at Egyptian facilities for re-export to international markets.
The development is expected to strengthen regional energy security and reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional energy hub.
