Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has directed the Ministry of Transport and the National Authority for Tunnels to accelerate construction works on Greater Cairo metro projects, with particular focus on the first phase of Metro Line 4.
The directive came during the president’s inspection tour on Tuesday morning of the under-construction Pyramids Station in Giza, part of the initial phase of the new metro line.
During the visit, Sisi reviewed the operation of tunnel boring machines at the site and received a detailed briefing from the head of the National Authority for Tunnels. The presentation covered progress on Metro Line 4 and the Pyramids Station project, which is scheduled to open in the first half of 2028, according to an official statement.
Metro Line 4 is a key infrastructure project aimed at linking 6th of October City and New Cairo to the Greater Cairo metro network. The line is expected to serve densely populated areas, including Haram, Faisal, Omraneya, Giza, Nasr City, Al-Azhar University, and New Cairo.
According to Tarek El-Gewaily, chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, the line is projected to carry around 2 million passengers daily. It will also integrate with the 6th of October Monorail, enhancing connectivity across the capital.
As part of the tour, President Sisi symbolically launched the continuation of excavation works by activating a tunnel boring machine. The machine had just completed drilling the final section of the tunnel between Hadayek Al Ashgar and Pyramids stations, spanning approximately 635 meters, according to the presidential spokesperson.
At the end of the visit, the president stressed the importance of continuous monitoring of construction progress, adherence to timelines, and compliance with the highest standards of quality and safety. He also highlighted the importance of expanding environmentally friendly mass transit systems to better serve densely populated areas.
