Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, announced that Egypt plans to begin the delivery and operation of the first reactor at the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in the second half of 2028, with the remaining three reactors scheduled to come online throughout 2029.
Speaking during a visit to the project site on Wednesday, Madbouly stated that the facility will comprise four nuclear reactors with a total generation capacity of 4,800 megawatts, and that construction is progressing in line with the planned timeline.
He emphasized that the project had remained stuck on paper for many years until the political leadership took decisive action to turn the long-awaited dream into reality.
The project officially began in 2015 with the signing of the preliminary and framework agreements, and construction formally commenced in December 2017.
During the visit, Sherif Helmy, Chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA), delivered a detailed presentation on the plant’s components and current progress. He confirmed that all work is being carried out on schedule, with no obstacles that could delay the delivery or operation of the reactors.
Helmy added that construction is proceeding under the highest international standards of quality and nuclear safety, with strict oversight by the NPPA and relevant regulatory bodies.
He also highlighted the project's strong local participation, with Egyptian labor representing approximately 80% of the total workforce. Additionally, several key components are being locally manufactured by Egyptian companies, supporting national industry.
The El-Dabaa plant, he noted, is based on the latest nuclear technology, with construction being executed by highly qualified Egyptian and Russian teams, and it will be operated entirely by Egyptian staff from day one.
