The Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation has released its second follow-up report on the NWFE National Platform, highlighting progress in integrating water, food, and energy projects.

The findings were presented by Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, during an event attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, several government ministers, development partners, and representatives from the private sector.

In line with Egypt’s commitment to sustainable development, the government increased the share of green projects in the national budget to 50% by the end of the current fiscal year.

As part of this strategic expansion, four new projects have been added to the NWFE platform, including two renewable energy projects by Norway’s Scatec, a renewable energy project by TAQA Arabia, and the Zaafarana seawater desalination plant in Ain Sokhna.

These additions reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional hub for green investment, attracting more international partnerships and solidifying the country’s commitment to a sustainable, low-carbon future.

The event, held under the theme Two Years of Implementation, underscored the ministry’s commitment to economic diplomacy and transparency, showcasing the progress made in NWFE projects since their launch in November 2022.

With NWFE achieving significant milestones over the past two years and aligning with international standards set by the G20 and global financial institutions, Egypt is now collaborating with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to expand the initiative.

The first phase of this regional expansion will bring NWFE to Kenya, Senegal, and Zambia, with a long-term vision to extend it across the African continent.

In addition, the program has been expanded with four new projects, focusing on renewable energy and seawater desalination.

This expansion enhances the program’s portfolio and ability to attract innovative financing, while reinforcing Egypt’s global leadership in climate action.

Egypt’s progress in green development has been further recognized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which recently approved a $1.3 billion loan from the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).

This funding will support structural reforms in Egypt’s green transition, including the expansion of the NWFE platform with new projects that enhance sustainability and economic resilience.

Minister Al-Mashat noted that Egypt is now the second-largest producer of renewable energy in Africa, according to a recent International Energy Agency (IEA) report, reflecting the country’s leadership in clean energy production and climate action.
