Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Belgian Jan De Nul Group to explore the ways of exporting renewable energy from Egypt to Europe.

The purpose of this agreement is to cooperate to prepare for implementing a project to export renewable energy to Europe via the Mediterranean, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker said.

He added that the process will be carried out using a marine interconnection line with a capacity of no less than 2 gigawatts.

The MoU came within the government’s efforts to strengthen the partnership in the field of energy between Egypt and the European continent, electricity minister added.

Within the scope of Egypt's strategy to boost renewable energy, earlier in October, the Ministry of International Cooperation released a report stated that Egypt will implement renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 10 gigawatts and investments of $10 billion within 5 years. This will replace 10 thermal power plants with a capacity of 5 gigawatts.

Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) recently in October signed several agreements to establish a new green ammonia and green hydrogen project on the sidelines of the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for international cooperation in Beijing, China, according to a statement by the Cabinet.
