Engineer Abdelmotaleb Mamdouh, Deputy Chairman of the New Urban Communities Authority for Development and City Development, has launched the "Low Emission Zones" initiative from the New Administrative Capital to monitor and reduce carbon emissions in new cities.

This initiative aims to preserve the environment and tackle climate change. The launch event was attended by Engineer Kamal Bahgat, Assistant to the Deputy Chairman of the Authority; Wael Shaaban, Assistant to the Deputy Chairman of the Authority and Head of the Monitoring and Measurement Workgroup at the New Urban Communities Authority; Engineer Sherif El Sherbiny, Head of the New Administrative Capital Authority; and Dr. Dunia Rabie, General Coordinator of the Working Group and officials from the Authority and the Authority.

Engineer Abdelmotaleb Mamdouh explained that this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to address climate change challenges faced by the planet, in line with the Egyptian government's strong commitment to providing a healthy and safe life free from carbon emissions that affect the citizens' well-being.

On his part, Engineer Sherif El Sherbiny emphasized that the New Administrative Capital is the first city where the carbon emissions monitoring and reduction initiative is being launched.

This move aligns with the implementation of the Egyptian government's plans in this important area and the recommendations of the COP27 World Climate Conference, which was hosted in Egypt last year. He further explained that the mixed-use residential area was selected as the location for taking necessary measurements to assess the carbon emissions levels in the region, marking the beginning of the initiative.

The President of the New Administrative Capital Authority added that choosing the New Administrative Capital as the starting point for the initiative was crucial.

The consideration was given to ensure that each individual in the capital has access to more than 15 square meters of green spaces. Moreover, the New Administrative Capital is a connected city with various transportation means, a smart city where services are provided electronically, and a city designed for living and thriving.

Wael Shaaban, the head of the workgroup at the Authority, explained that the goal of launching the initiative was to implement the recommendations that emerged from the COP27 World Climate Conference, hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh in November 2022.

The initiative will be extended to other new cities under the jurisdiction of the New Urban Communities Authority, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions.

Dr. Dunia Rabie highlighted some of the tasks of the Environmental Monitoring and Measurement Unit, which include identifying gaps in climate-related work and opportunities for international support to finance climate change mitigation measures in line with the new urban agenda.

The launch of the "Low Emission Zones" initiative showcases Egypt's commitment to environmental sustainability and combating climate change.

By taking proactive measures to monitor and reduce carbon emissions, the country is positioning itself as a leader in addressing climate challenges. This initiative will not only contribute to a healthier and greener future for Egyptian citizens but also attract global recognition and investment in sustainable urban development.
