Google's spokesperson clarified that Google Wallet is initially offering a passes-only experience, allowing users to conveniently store and access boarding passes, event tickets, and loyalty cards in their digital wallet.
“A passes-only version of Google Wallet is now available in Egypt,” according to a statement by Google’s spokesperson shared with Business Today Egypt, adding that the tech company is working on releasing payment features soon.
Google's spokesperson clarified that Google Wallet is initially offering a passes-only experience, allowing users to conveniently store and access boarding passes, event tickets, and loyalty cards in their digital wallet.
Payment features will be released once the company has completed agreements with the Central Bank of Egypt and other institutions to tokenize payments in Egypt, the statement highlighted.
The news follows an official Google Wallet release note which shared that the e-wallet would be releasing in Egypt in Jan.
Google’s announcement follows the recent launch of Apple Pay and the Central Bank of Egypt's (CBE) implementation of payment card tokenization for mobile apps.
Unlike Apple Pay, which is restricted to select Apple devices, Google Wallet supports a wider range of devices, ensuring broader accessibility for users.
Launched in 2011, Google Wallet has established itself as a significant force in the mobile payment space, allowing users to securely store their card details and make payments directly from their smartphones.
