Eni announces major gas discovery offshore Egypt

The Denise W discovery is situated about 70 kilometers offshore in water depths of 95 meters and lies less than 10 kilometers from existing infrastructure, a factor expected to enable rapid and cost-efficient development.

Eni has announced a significant new gas and condensate discovery in Egypt following the successful drilling of the Denise W-1 exploration well in the Temsah Concession, located in the Eastern Mediterranean offshore region.

Preliminary estimates suggest the discovery holds approximately 2 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas initially in place (GIIP), along with around 130 million barrels of associated condensates. The Denise W discovery is situated about 70 kilometers offshore in water depths of 95 meters and lies less than 10 kilometers from existing infrastructure, a factor expected to enable rapid and cost-efficient development.

The reservoir characteristics are comparable to those of the nearby Temsah field, which has been producing since 2001. Early assessments indicate a high-quality gas-bearing sandstone reservoir with an estimated 50 meters of net pay, highlighting strong production potential.

The discovery underscores Eni’s ongoing commitment to supporting Egypt’s energy sector by increasing reserves and boosting domestic gas production. This aligns with the country’s broader strategy to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on imports. The find also reflects Eni’s continued success in leveraging near-field and infrastructure-led exploration to revitalize mature assets.

The drilling of Denise W-1 follows a binding agreement signed in July 2025 between Eni, Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), and Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) to extend the Temsah Concession for 20 years.

Eni operates the Denise Development Lease within the concession, holding a 50% working interest alongside bp, which owns the remaining 50%. Operations are managed through Petrobel, the joint venture between Eni and EGPC.

Active in Egypt since 1954, Eni maintains a diversified portfolio across exploration, development, and production. In 2025, the company reported equity production of approximately 242,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (kboed), reinforcing its position as a key player in Egypt’s energy landscape.
