The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy announced that the severe and unprecedented global crisis affecting energy resources, driven by the ongoing war in the Arabian Gulf region, has required the ministry to implement price increases for certain residential and commercial electricity consumption brackets, effective from April.
The ministry emphasized that it took great care to ensure that these increases would not affect lower residential consumption tiers, which include the majority of Egyptian households. These lower tiers represent approximately 40% of total subscribers in Egypt, with around 86% of them remaining fully exempt from any price increases. The adjustments will be limited to higher consumption tiers, which generally include more financially capable users.
In this context, electricity prices for all consumption levels up to 2,000 kilowatt-hours per month will remain unchanged. However, the 2,000 kWh tier and higher consumption brackets will see an average increase of about 16%.
In line with the principle of social responsibility and equitable burden-sharing among different segments of society, where those with greater capacity and higher energy usage contribute more, the ministry also decided to raise commercial electricity tariffs across all categories by an average of approximately 20%.
The ministry stressed that these measures were unavoidable in light of the current global energy crisis, described as the most serious in decades. It added that the increases are necessary to ensure the continued and reliable supply of electricity to all Egyptians, whether for residential, commercial, or industrial use.
