Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced a new natural gas discovery in the Western Desert, as part of ongoing efforts to boost domestic production and reduce import costs.
The discovery was made by Apache Corporation in cooperation with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), following the drilling of the SKAL-1X exploratory well in the South Kalabsha area.
Initial test results indicate daily production rates of around 26 million cubic feet of natural gas, alongside approximately 2,700 barrels of condensates.
The ministry said the discovery reflects the success of recent investment incentives and measures aimed at encouraging exploration and increasing production. These policies have supported Apache’s expansion in exploration activities and investments, particularly in new areas adjacent to its existing concessions.
Located near the company’s current operations, the new discovery benefits from proximity to established infrastructure and production facilities, enhancing economic feasibility and helping reduce development costs.
Officials noted that this approach is expected to accelerate the development process and bring new discoveries online in a shorter timeframe, supporting efforts to offset natural declines in mature fields while optimizing capital expenditure.
