Egypt, South Korea deepen strategic ties during President Lee’s first visit to Cairo

President Sisi welcomed the Korean leader and emphasized the importance of strengthening the distinguished bilateral relationship as Egypt and South Korea celebrate 30 years of diplomatic ties.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and First Lady Entissar El-Sisi welcomed South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and the First Lady of Korea to Cairo, marking President Lee’s first official visit to Egypt since taking office in June 2025.
 
According to Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed El-Shenawy, the visit included a formal reception ceremony, a review of the honor guard, national anthems, and an official photo, followed by a closed meeting between the two leaders and an expanded session with both delegations.
 
President Sisi welcomed the Korean leader and emphasized the importance of strengthening the distinguished bilateral relationship as Egypt and South Korea celebrate 30 years of diplomatic ties. 
 
He highlighted Egypt’s commitment to expanding cooperation in economic, investment, cultural, and education fields, praising Korea’s development model and expressing Egypt’s interest in attracting more Korean companies, particularly in ICT, automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding, AI, petrochemicals, and mining.
 
President Sisi also underscored the incentives and guarantees Egypt provides to foreign investors, reaffirming the competitiveness of the Egyptian market.
 
President Lee expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated South Korea’s keenness to deepen cooperation with Egypt across all sectors, praising Egypt’s achievements in recent years, including the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum.
 
Talks also addressed regional developments. President Sisi reviewed Egypt’s continued efforts to implement the Gaza ceasefire agreement and the relevant UN Security Council resolution, stressing that the two-state solution remains the only path to lasting peace in the Middle East. 
 
President Lee commended Egypt’s key role in achieving the Gaza ceasefire and organizing the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, reaffirming South Korea’s support for the two-state solution.
 
The two leaders also discussed developments in the Korean Peninsula and East Asia, and agreed on the importance of preserving the sovereignty of states and advancing political solutions to regional crises.
 
Two memorandums of understanding in culture and education were signed during the visit.
 
In a joint press conference, President Sisi emphasized Egypt’s readiness to welcome more Korean investments, encourage industrial localization, and expand cooperation in AI, ICT, petrochemicals, automotive manufacturing, and shipbuilding. He also welcomed proposals to establish a Korean university focused on science and technology in Egypt, in addition to the possibility of opening Korean schools.
 
President Sisi concluded by praising the strong political will demonstrated by President Lee to advance bilateral cooperation, expressing Egypt’s full commitment to supporting Korean companies and enhancing partnerships across economic, cultural, and defense sectors.
