The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), South Korea’s official development assistance agency, and Egypt’s Ministry of Environment held an online knowledge-sharing seminar to mark the completion of a three-year training program on Geographic Information System (GIS) for environmental planning and management.

Implemented between 2023 and 2025 under KOICA’s Capacity Improvement & Advancement for Tomorrow (CIAT) fellowship program, the initiative aimed to strengthen the Ministry’s capacity in environmental planning by establishing and activating an effective GIS framework. The program trained officials from the Ministry of Environment, equipping them with practical skills to improve environmental governance.

The seminar brought together Ministry officials and KOICA partners, including Beni Suef Technological University (BTU) and the General Authority for Export and Import Control (GOEIC). Alumni from the program’s three batches presented their experiences, while a CIAT Master’s alumna shared her academic and cultural journey in Korea.

Participants highlighted how the training has enhanced public services and contributed to more effective action plans in the sector.

A KOICA CIAT Master’s alumna described her time in Korea as a transformative experience that strengthened her leadership and broadened her vision. She also emphasized the values of solidarity, kindness, and hard work she encountered, noting their importance in driving national progress.

Since 1998, KOICA’s Egypt Office has trained more than 1,838 participants through its CIAT program, in addition to 132 Master’s and PhD scholars. In 2025 alone, 45 Egyptian officials from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Interior, and the National Council for Women received training, while six candidates were selected for KOICA’s scholarship program.

KOICA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Egypt’s sustainable development and enhancing institutional capacities through knowledge exchange and human resource development.
