Egypt has secured the top spot in a global cybersecurity competition organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), outperforming 137 other countries in a test of national cyber incident response capabilities.

The announcement was made by Walid Zakaria, Vice President of the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) for Cybersecurity, during the opening session of the fourth edition of the CAISEC’25 Conference and Exhibition. Zakaria highlighted Egypt’s long-term commitment to cybersecurity, beginning with the establishment of the Egyptian Supreme Cybersecurity Council in 2009.

He noted that the country's first Cyber Incident Response Center was launched by a small team of six engineers following extensive research and feasibility studies. Since then, Egypt has weathered global cybersecurity threats and earned international recognition for its official reports and strategic responses.

Over the years, Egypt has also produced 19 research papers and rolled out multiple services aimed at strengthening its cyber defense systems.

Zakaria stressed that the recent ITU-hosted competition in the UAE evaluated how participating countries analyzed and responded to cyber incidents. Egypt’s first-place finish marks a significant achievement in showcasing its cybersecurity prowess on the global stage.

On the regulatory front, he pointed to key frameworks developed by the NTRA and endorsed by the Supreme Cybersecurity Council. These include protective frameworks and operational guidelines for companies working in the cybersecurity sector. Out of 130 registered companies, 44 have applied for official cybersecurity licenses.

Zakaria added that Egypt has launched several initiatives and locally developed cybersecurity products that meet international quality standards, all under the supervision of the Supreme Cybersecurity Council.

This milestone reflects Egypt’s ongoing investment in digital infrastructure, resilience, and national cyber defense capabilities.
