Egypt and US have signed contracts worth more than $235 million aimed at modernizing Egypt’s railway infrastructure.

The contracts were signed between Egypt’s National Railways and U.S.-based Progress Rail, and include three major components.

The first is a $185 million deal to modernize 1,000 diesel-electric locomotives.

The second is a 15-year agreement, worth $42 million, to supply spare parts for 141 locomotives.

The third is a $5 million, five-year technical assistance contract to support those same 141 locomotives, with the possibility of extending the agreement for an additional five years.

The agreements mark a significant milestone in bilateral trade relations and are expected to support job creation and long-term development in the transport sector.

This collaboration underscores the growing economic partnership between the two nations and highlights the role of American expertise in advancing Egypt’s transport modernization efforts.

U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, Herro Mustafa Garg, emphasized the strategic importance of the agreements, stating, “I am thrilled to witness the signing of these contracts, which bring mutual prosperity to Egypt and the United States. The United States is proud to support Egypt’s expanding railway infrastructure, a key driver of economic growth and regional stability.”
