Egypt, European Union, and the French Development Agency (AFD), signed financing and grant agreements worth €131.5 million to support two major wastewater treatment projects.
The funding will support the third phase of the Gabal El-Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant and a new wastewater treatment plant in East Alexandria.
The third phase of the Gabal El-Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant will have a daily capacity of one million cubic meters and will include both design and construction, along with sludge treatment using anaerobic digesters.
Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year.
The East Alexandria Wastewater Treatment Plant will be designed and executed by the Executive Authority for Potable Water and Sanitation.
It will have a capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day and will also feature sludge treatment through anaerobic digestion.
For the East Alexandria project, agreements were signed for €68 million in financing and a €2 million grant from AFD.
As for the Gabal El-Asfar project, financing agreements included €50 million from AFD, a €1.5 million grant from AFD, and an additional €10 million grant from the European Union, managed by AFD.
These agreements mark a continued commitment to enhancing Egypt’s infrastructure in partnership with France and the European Union, contributing to sustainable development and improved public services.
