These agreements mark the beginning of the development of Cyprus’s natural gas discoveries, utilizing Egypt’s well-established infrastructure.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides attended the Egypt International Energy Conference (EGYPES 2025) in Cairo, where they witnessed the signing of two historic agreements between Egypt and Cyprus.
These agreements mark the beginning of the development of Cyprus’s natural gas discoveries, utilizing Egypt’s well-established infrastructure.
The agreements align with Egypt’s strategic vision to become a regional hub for natural gas trade and distribution.
Under this strategy, Egypt aims to receive gas from discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean, supply it to the domestic market, and re-export it to Europe, reinforcing its position as a key energy player in the region.
The first agreement was signed by Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, George Papanastasiou, Cyprus’s Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, and Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the Italian energy company Eni.
The second agreement was signed by Karim Badawi, Minister George Papanastasiou, and Clay Neff, President of Chevron Global Exploration and Production.
These agreements represent a significant step forward in strengthening energy cooperation between Egypt and Cyprus.
They pave the way for developing Cypriot gas fields using Egyptian infrastructure, setting the foundation for further collaboration in the energy sector.
Additionally, negotiations are ongoing to bring more Cypriot gas to Egypt, further cementing Egypt’s role as a central hub for regional gas processing and exports.
