Egypt’s ranking the Economist’s 2021 Inclusive Internet Index went up by 5, placing the country as 73rd out of 120 countries listed in the index, says Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat.

The minister highlighted that the new ranking reflects the government’s efforts to be more digitized, and added that his ministry is currently implementing an integrated plan of action through Telecom Egypt to improve communications networks and develop communications infrastructure throughout the country.

Work is underway to implement the third phase of the project during the current year, which has contributed to the doubling of Internet speed in Egypt six times compared to January 2019, explained Talaat.

Egypt ranked as the 4th top country among 29 African nations in the index.

“Egypt saw improvements in all four pillars, but especially so in Relevance where it saw significant improvements in local e-content,” wrote the index’s report on Egypt, which noted weaknesses in relevant content and competitive environment.

This is the index’s 5th year recording global internet inclusiveness, commissioned by Facebook and conducted by The Economist Intelligence Unit, covered 96 percent of the world’s population this year.
