Ministry Data Reveals Surging Interest in Online Shopping Among Egyptian Consumers

Ministry data unveils a surge in Egyptian e-commerce as internet users increasingly turn to online platforms for shopping.

According to data from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the usage of e-commerce among Egyptian households has been revealed. The statistics indicate that the percentage of internet users who search for goods and services online in 2022/2021 reached approximately 72.7% compared to about 63.3% in 2020/2019.

Meanwhile, the percentage of internet users who make purchases of goods and services online in 2022/2021 reached about 50.1% compared to about 17.8% in 2020/2019.

Regarding the goods and services purchased online, approximately 48.8% of individuals use the internet to buy clothes, shoes, and other items, while about 29.7% purchase food products. Additionally, around 28.3% utilize services like Uber and Careem, and about 18% purchase cosmetics. Moreover, approximately 13.8% of individuals buy medications online.

On the other hand, the data from the ministry also revealed that about 98.4% of individuals who make purchases online prefer the cash-on-delivery payment method.

Furthermore, approximately 47.9% of individuals with intermediate and higher education levels engage in online shopping, while about 41.9% of individuals outside the labor force make purchases online. Additionally, around 42.5% of individuals aged 15-29 engage in online shopping.

The number of trainees in the Capacity Development Program provided by the Information Technology Institute until the end of the period from October to December 2023 reached 16,960 trainees.
