Egypt will produce approximately 140,000 tons of sugar during the ongoing season of local sugar beet supply. The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade made the announcement on Saturday, marking the commencement of the reception of sugar beet crops from farmers at the Abu Qurqas sugar factory, a major sugar production facility located in the Minya governorate of Upper Egypt.

With the current season extending until August, the ministry aims to receive nearly 1 million tons of sugar beet. Farmers across various governorates have cultivated approximately 600,000 tons of sugar beet in preparation for this season.

To encourage farmers to increase their supply rates, the ministry has set a target of supplying a total of 1.7 million tons of beets from a cultivated area spanning 600,000 acres during the 2024 sugar beet season. As part of this effort, the price of supplying a ton of sugar beets has been increased from 1,500 pounds to a range of 1,900 to 1,350 pounds, inclusive of an additional incentive for each ton.

Chairman of the Egyptian Sugar and Integrated Industries Company (ESIIC), Essam El-Din El-Bedewy, expressed optimism that the sugar crisis will be resolved within the next two weeks as sugar production from sugar beet ramps up across various factories.

El-Bedewy specifically highlighted the Abu Qurqas factory's ambitions to produce 70,000 tons of sugar annually for the state, allocate 35,000 tons to other parties and generate 30,000 tons of beet fodder for exports.
