The ministry also introduced a new ticket pricing scheme for passengers traveling more than 23 stops, close to a year since its introduction of tickets for trips passing through 25 stations/stops
The Ministry of Transport announced that ticket prices for the three-line Cairo Metro would be raised by EGP 1-2, effective Monday, January 1st. This is the first time the ministry has altered the prices since 2020, with the metro serving over 3.5 million commuters daily within the Greater Cairo area.
In 2022, the ministry bumped ticket prices to set those for 1 to 9 stops (one zone) to EGP 5 from EGP 3, tickets for 10 to 16 stops (2 zones) were increased to EGP 7 from EGP 5, while travelers moving through more than 16 stops (3 zones) would pay EGP 10.
The ministry also introduced a new ticket pricing scheme for passengers traveling more than 23 stops, close to a year since its introduction of tickets for trips passing through 25 stations/stops.
According to the new pricing scheme, traveling between 1 to 9 stops will now cost EGP 6 from EGP 5, 10 to 16 stops are now EGP 8 from EGP 7, moving through 17 to 23 stops are now priced at EGP 15.
As part of efforts to modernize public transport in the country, Egypt has intensified efforts to expand the metro system for years, including building additional metro lines and expanding existing lines in Cairo.
In November 2023, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly approved the trial operation of the third and final stage of the metro’s third line.
Since the end of November, the Cairo Metro extended its Thursday working hours until 1 am until the end of December on a trial basis in response to marketing surveys.
