Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics has revealed a significant development in the number of ships transiting through the Suez Canal over the past ten years, specifically from 2013 to 2022.

This period witnessed the achievement of record-breaking figures at the end of the previous year.

According to the agency's data, the total development in the number of ships transiting through the Suez Canal during the mentioned period reached approximately 186,900 vessels. The evolution of ships over the past 10 years is as follows:

•           16,600 ships in 2013.

•           17,100 ships in 2014, marking a 3.3% increase.

•           17,500 ships in 2015, with a 2% increase.

•           16,800 ships in 2016, experiencing a 3.7% decrease.

•           17,600 ships in 2017, showing a 4.3% increase.

•           18,200 ships in 2018, representing a 3.6% increase.

•           18,900 ships in 2019, reflecting a 3.9% increase.

•           24,700 ships in 2022, achieving a remarkable 19.2% increase and setting a new record.

The consistent growth in the number of ships transiting through the Suez Canal highlights its pivotal role as a vital global trade route and emphasizes Egypt's efforts to enhance and optimize its maritime infrastructure. This development signifies the increased confidence of international traders and the effectiveness of the measures undertaken to ensure the smooth flow of traffic through the canal.

Egypt's strategic location as a gateway between Europe and Asia, along with the expansion projects and ongoing efforts to improve the Suez Canal's capacity and efficiency, have contributed to the significant growth in ship transits.

This surge in maritime activity has a positive impact on Egypt's economy, as it boosts revenue from tolls, stimulates related industries, and reinforces the country's position as a major logistics and trade hub.
