Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled El-Anani has announced that Egypt received an average of $4.1 billion in revenues last year, with around 3.7 million tourists visiting the country.
Between July and the end of December 2020, during when inbound tourism was resumed, Egypt received 1.4 million tourists.
El-Anani’s comments were during his speech before the House of Representatives’ General Assembly, which was held on Thursday.
The minister also noted that the antiquities sector’s debts reached EGP 7 billion, but that the tourism sector saw revenues rise to EGP 1b billion in 2020. This reflects a significant increase on the EGP 22 million the country earned prior to 2016.
El-Anani said that the coronavirus pandemic is the largest crisis to have affected the sector, and highlighted that the government has taken several measures to support the country’s tourism sector.
Several initiatives have been created and implemented by the government for tourism companies and hotels to ensure that employees in the sector are not laid off.
