The National Bank of Egypt (NBE), one of the leading banks in Egypt, has earned the ISO 27001:2022 information security certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI), making it the first bank in Egypt and Africa to achieve this prestigious recognition.

The bank was able to meet all the requirements of the new standard, which was issued in October 2022 as an updated version of the previous ISO 27001:2013.

In 2016, the National Bank of Egypt became the first bank in Egypt and North Africa to receive the compliance certification, and it has renewed it for a third time in May 2022 after undergoing a comprehensive evaluation of all controls that include securing data within data centers, call centers, and electronic service branches.

Hisham Okasha, the Chairman of the National Bank of Egypt, expressed his pride in the bank's ability to obtain this international certification, which confirms the bank's commitment to implementing the latest international standards to secure customer and employee data.

It also reflects the bank's efficiency and effectiveness in managing its operations and banking services, as well as its growing role in serving and protecting the national economy and achieving financial and banking stability while preserving depositors' funds and maximizing returns on invested capital.

Dalia El-Baz, the Vice Chairman of the National Bank of Egypt, confirmed the bank's interest in implementing a comprehensive framework of governance controls and technology security to apply new standards in line with international regulations.

This is to increase the efficiency and readiness of the bank's various specialized teams in securing customer data by preemptively combating cyber risks and technology-related hazards, securing all digital products that the bank offers its customers, and making their financial transactions easier and safer.

Meanwhile, Abeer Khedr, the Head of Cybersecurity at the National Bank of Egypt, added that the bank was able to achieve compliance with the new standard requirements by applying a clear and integrated cybersecurity strategy that takes into account the latest technological developments and maintains its capability to deal with cyber threats in a proactive manner.

The National Bank of Egypt continues to set a new standard in the Egyptian banking industry by staying at the forefront of technological developments and setting high standards for cybersecurity.

The National Bank of Egypt's attainment of the ISO 27001:2022 information security certification comes at a time when digitalization and cybersecurity are becoming critical aspects of the banking industry. The certification reflects the National Bank of Egypt's commitment to maintaining a secure banking environment while offering innovative digital solutions that cater to its customers' needs.

This move will have a positive impact on the Egyptian banking industry, as other banks will likely follow the National Bank of Egypt's lead in obtaining such certifications and prioritizing cybersecurity.
