During the seventh episode of the academic monitoring activity for the 2022-2023 academic year, the National Planning Institute presented a reading on the report "Future of Manufacturing in Post-Pandemic World" issued by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) 2022.

The activity was held at the institute's headquarters under the management of Dr. Aziza Ali Abdul Razzaq, coordinator of the scientific monitoring activity, and the scientific supervisor of the institute's scientific monitoring activity, with the participation of Maha Al-Shal, Assistant Professor of Economics at the Center for Planning and Industrial Development at the institute.

In this context, Dr. Aziza Ali Abdul Razzaq explained that the report "Future of Manufacturing in Post-Pandemic World 2022" is a fundamental contribution to support planning efforts for recovery.

It confirms that countries with stronger manufacturing capabilities, more diverse industrial sectors, and greener industries have been better able to overcome the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic than their counterparts.

Furthermore, she added that the report discusses the prominent challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic on manufacturing and preparedness for the future.

It also highlights the role of digitization in the global response to the pandemic by adopting advanced digital production technology, remote work, and industrial applications of the Internet of Things or virtual reality that help reorganize production processes for safety and distancing measures.

In her reading of the report, Dr. Maha Al-Shal indicated that the content of the report is based on reviewing the existing structural factors that shape the countries' resilience, the responses of companies and governments to support industry, as well as the major trends that are likely to contribute to shaping the future of industrial development, and comprehensive and sustainable industrial recovery support policies.

The report also emphasized the importance of manufacturing during crises, and the different impact of the pandemic on economic activity depending on the nature of industrial economies in developing and advanced countries.

The report shed light on success stories of countries that were able to overcome the pandemic challenges and achieve sustainable industrial development through their commitment to strengthening manufacturing and industry sectors.

The UNIDO report presented by the National Planning Institute affirms the significance of the manufacturing industry as a crucial element in post-pandemic recovery. The report also highlights the importance of digitalization in the global response to the pandemic, which will undoubtedly contribute to the formation of the future of industrial development.
