President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has directed the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and relevant state agencies to take the necessary measures to protect children under 15 from the misuse of social media platforms.
El-Sisi stressed the importance of responsible use of social media during a speech at the graduation ceremony of a new class from the Egyptian Military Academy, according to a statement from presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shenawy.
The directive comes as Egypt continues work on a regulatory framework aimed at protecting children and young people from harmful online content.
Earlier this year, the government reviewed measures including age-rating systems, parental controls and other safeguards for minors using digital platforms.
El-Sisi said the Egyptian Military Academy’s training programs also aim to equip young people to understand and counter attempts to destabilize the country, referring to the events of 2011-2013.
He stressed that protecting Egypt’s state institutions is a responsibility shared by society, families and public institutions, rather than being limited to the president or government.
El-Sisi also said genuine institutional reform requires a serious and sustained process, noting that reform in countries with millions of citizens takes time and requires broader public understanding.
The president’s latest directive adds to government efforts to establish stronger safeguards around children’s use of social media and digital platforms.
