President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met on Sunday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat to review the latest developments in Egypt’s power and renewable energy projects.

Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy said the meeting discussed the implementation status of the second phase of projects aimed at strengthening the national electricity grid. The Minister of Electricity noted that this phase includes around 105 projects, reviewing their progress as well as plans to connect renewable energy projects, including solar and wind power, to the electricity grid by 2027.

President El-Sisi stressed the need to improve the quality of electricity supply, enhance the efficiency of traditional fuel use, and ensure the stability of the national grid. He also emphasized the importance of fully adhering to the set timelines for implementing projects and connecting them to the grid, in support of Egypt’s energy transition and sustainable development goals.

The meeting also reviewed mechanisms for implementing solar energy projects and battery energy storage systems as part of Egypt’s plan to raise the share of renewable energy in the energy mix to 45% within the next two years. The plan also includes expanding grid-connected and standalone energy storage stations.

In this context, Minister Mahmoud Esmat reviewed the operation of the first phase of the Obelisk Solar Power Plant, with a capacity of 500 megawatts, along with a grid-connected energy storage station with a capacity of 200 megawatt-hours. Both were connected to the grid at the beginning of this year. He also reviewed the progress of the plant’s second phase, with a capacity of 500 megawatts, which is scheduled to be connected to the grid in the coming weeks, as part of Egypt’s plan to add new solar and wind capacities during the current summer.

President El-Sisi directed the regular monitoring and review of renewable energy projects, whether already operational or under implementation. He also called for continued cooperation with all relevant state institutions and authorities, in partnership with local and foreign private sector companies implementing these projects under Egypt’s national energy strategy. The President further highlighted the importance of implementing solar, wind, and energy storage projects in local currency.

He also stressed the need to expand energy storage systems in order to maximize the benefits of renewable energy and enhance grid stability.

The Presidential Spokesman added that the Minister of Electricity also reviewed the latest developments in the Energy Valley project, one of the world’s largest integrated clean energy projects. The project includes 1.7 gigawatts AC of photovoltaic solar power generation, fully implemented in Minya Governorate, supported by battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 4 gigawatt-hours distributed across Minya, Qena, and Alexandria.

President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of these projects in supporting the electricity and renewable energy sector’s plans to expand the use of renewable energy, reduce carbon emissions, and diversify energy sources. He also stressed that localizing industries related to renewable energy is a key pillar for strengthening energy security and advancing Egypt’s green transition.
