Public employees number in the 769K, declines 3.9% from 2019: CAPMAS

Egypt’s public and public business sector had a total of 760,700 employees in 2020, showing a decrease of 3.9 percent compared to 2019, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The data was issued in the agency’s Annual Bulletin of workers in public/ public business sector Statistics 2020. It was previously recorded that 791,200 were employed in the sector back in 2019.

Segregated by gender, the report noted that there was a total of 659,700 male workers in the sector in 2020, compared to 686,400 in 2019, reflecting a decrease of 3.9 percent.

Female employment in the sector dropped by 3.7 percent, reaching 100,900 in 2020 compared to 104,800 in 2019.

The Housing and Construction sector recorded the highest number of workers with 213,600 workers, representing 28.1 percent of total number of workers in the public/public business sector.

The industry, petroleum and mineral resources sector, which accounted for 23 percent, and the electricity sector which accounted for 16.2 percent.

The capital Cairo saw the 41 percent of public employment with the highest number of public employees, recording 312,000 workers.

Cairo was followed by Alexandria which accounted for 71,000, Qaliubiya accounted for about 36,000, Gharbeya accounted for about 34,000 and finally the Giza governorate closed the list with about 31,000 workers.

Executive jobs recorded the highest rate of 30.9 percent of the total number of employees, while senior management jobs recorded the lowest rate of 1.7 percent of the total number of employees.

The government has recently announced public sector employee wage raises, and released an official statement earlier today that public sector employees not covered by the Civil Service Act are officially in line for raises of 13 percent of their basic salaries in July.
