Impact of 5G on Egypt's Digital Transformation & Economic Growth

The fifth generation (5G) of mobile networks, significantly advances connectivity by offering faster speeds, lower latency, and enhanced device support. Capable of reaching speeds up to 10 Gbps, 5G allows for rapid downloads, and seamless streaming, and enables high-definition applications like virtual and augmented reality to operate in real-time.

With latency often under 10 milliseconds—compared to the 30–50 milliseconds of 4G—5G supports near-instantaneous responses, making it ideal for critical applications such as autonomous driving, remote surgeries, and online gaming.

 Additionally, 5G networks can handle a high density of connected devices, providing reliable connectivity in crowded areas and facilitating the growth of smart cities and IoT networks.

Egypt paves the way for 5G

At the beginning of the year, Telecom Egypt received a license to operate 5G services for $150 million, valid for 15 years, making it the first company in the country to obtain this privilege.

Earlier in October, The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) signed an agreement with the three leading telecom companies: Orange Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, and e& Egypt, granting them licenses for 5G mobile services.

At the signing ceremony, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat highlighted the transformative potential of 5G technology for Egypt's economy, noting that it would enhance its position in global communications and information technology rankings.

Talaat further pointed out that 5G’s ultra-fast speeds will play a crucial role in accelerating Egypt's digital transformation efforts.

With these newly signed licenses, all mobile operators in Egypt are now authorized to deploy 5G networks, representing a major milestone in the advancement of the nation's telecommunications infrastructure.

The four mobile companies will begin operating the service on a trial basis within 3 months from now, and the service will be operated commercially within 6 months, meaning that the service will be activated by the first quarter of 2025.

" The introduction of 5G technology in Egypt represents a significant leap forward in telecommunications, promising to transform various sectors of the economy and society. 5G promises to enhance connectivity and drive innovation across multiple industries with its faster speeds, lower latency, and greater capacity," Policy and ICT Legal Advisor Former, Head of Legislative Committee -Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Mohamed Hegazy, told Business Today Egypt.

How 5G will support Egypt's digital transformation across sectors?

Manufacturing and Industry sector

5G supports the growth of smart factories with its ability to handle large numbers of connected devices. Manufacturers can leverage the technology for automation, predictive maintenance, and real-time data analysis, which will improve efficiency and reduce costs.

According to Hegazy, the manufacturing sector will experience a shift toward automation and smart production. 5G will support connected machinery and real-time data analytics, enabling manufacturers to optimize operations, reduce downtime, and enhance productivity.

Improved tracking of inventory and logistics through IoT devices will streamline supply chain management, reducing costs and improving efficiency.

Finance and Retail

 With 5G, banks and retailers can implement enhanced mobile payment systems, virtual reality shopping experiences, and secure, real-time data processing. This will improve customer experiences and provide new revenue opportunities for businesses.

Transportation

 5G aids in building smart transportation systems by facilitating vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. This can lead to safer roads, better traffic management, and support the eventual integration of autonomous vehicles.

The transportation sector will benefit from the integration of smart technologies enabled by 5G, which can facilitate the development of smart traffic management systems, improve vehicle flow, and reduce congestion in urban areas, Hegazy noted.

Public Safety and Smart Cities

 5G enables the development of smart cities by supporting the integration of IoT devices across urban infrastructure. This includes traffic cameras, environmental sensors, and emergency response systems, all of which contribute to enhanced public safety and efficient city management.

For his part, Policy and ICT Legal Advisor Former Hegazy added that the telecommunications sector will be the first to experience the benefits of 5G. With improved connectivity, mobile network providers can offer enhanced services, including faster internet speeds. 5G can support a far greater number of devices simultaneously, making it ideal for densely populated urban areas.

As a result, telecom operators can expand their service offerings, catering to the growing demand for data-intensive applications, Hegazy confirmed.

" In the healthcare sector, 5G is set to revolutionize patient care. With the high-speed connectivity of 5G, remote consultations and telehealth services will become more reliable, allowing patients in rural areas to access specialized care without the need for travel. Wearable health devices can transmit patient data instantly to healthcare providers, facilitating timely interventions and personalized care," Hegazy said.

Hegazy also noted that 5G will significantly impact education, particularly in enhancing remote learning opportunities. Faster internet speeds will support online education, making it more accessible to students across Egypt, especially in remote areas.

In agriculture, 5G technology will support precision farming practices as farmers can utilize connected devices to monitor crop health, soil conditions, and weather patterns in real-time, optimizing resource use and increasing yields, Hegazy added.

Expansion of E-commerce and Financial Services

5G’s high-speed connectivity will drastically reduce loading times for e-commerce platforms, enabling a smoother and more responsive user experience.

E-commerce businesses will benefit from faster, more reliable connections across supply chains, warehouses, and delivery services, allowing for real-time inventory tracking, automated ordering, and optimized route planning.

The high-speed connectivity of 5G will extend the reach of digital banking to underserved areas, enabling broader access to financial services for people in rural or remote locations. This can support financial inclusion and bring more of Egypt’s population into the formal banking system.

With 5G, mobile payment solutions will become faster, more reliable, and easier to use, encouraging more people to adopt digital wallets and online payment methods.

How 5G will boost foreign investment in Egypt?

In a press conference, Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, recently confirmed that Egypt is expected to witness $675 million in investments after introducing 5G networks.

Madbouly stated that this goal will be accomplished once the remaining telecommunications companies sign agreements for 5G networks.

5G will attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to Egypt by creating a more competitive business environment with high-speed digital infrastructure, critical for sectors like tech, finance, and manufacturing.

This connectivity supports advanced technologies (IoT, AI), reduces operational costs, and powers smart city projects, making Egypt a top choice for investors looking for sustainable, digitally advanced markets.

This initiative will attract investment in the field of exporting information technology services and digital creativity.

This technology is expected to contribute about $13.1 trillion to global economic output in 2035, the Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) explained in its analysis according to IHS Markit estimates.

The IDSC confirmed that 5G will provide 22.8 million new jobs that support the value chain, in addition to the global capital expenditure index for 5G networks and research and development rising by 10.8% over last year’s expectations to reach $265 billion annually in 2035.

Egypt has promising opportunities to establish itself as a regional leader in 5G-driven sectors. Egypt's new smart cities, like the New Administrative Capital, provide a platform to implement 5G-enabled IoT, AI, and automated services, setting a regional example for urban innovation and sustainability.

"With 5G facilitating faster and more reliable internet, startups, especially in tech, can thrive, and this ecosystem will attract venture capital and private equity investments," Policy and ICT Legal Advisor Former at MCIT Hegazy confirmed.

Hegazy pointed out that industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics will benefit from increased automation and real-time data analytics enabled by 5G. This leads to higher productivity, which is attractive to investors.

 According to Policy and ICT Legal Advisor Former at MCIT, improved efficiency and productivity can reduce operational costs, making investments in Egyptian businesses more appealing.

 By adopting advanced technologies like 5G, Egypt can enhance its reputation as a competitive player in the regional and global markets, attracting international businesses looking to expand, Hegazy added.

"Enhanced connectivity can facilitate trade and partnerships with other countries, increasing economic activity and investment opportunities, and the expansion of 5G technology will create jobs in various fields, including IT, telecommunications, and customer service, contributing to economic growth," Hegazy said.

With high-speed connectivity, startups and SMEs can run more efficient operations, leveraging cloud-based tools, real-time data analytics, and digital customer service platforms with minimal lag, boosting productivity and customer satisfaction.
