Egypt’s sales of personal computing devices jumped to 500,000 devices in 2020 as lockdowns and personal quarantines increased remote work and zoom classes due to the pandemic.

The sales of computers were positively affected by the repercussions of the coronavirus, with many shifting to work and study from home, says Ali Tolba, Chairperson of the Delta Company.

Total sales of computer hardware amounted to EGP 3.8 billion during 2020, he noted, with the size of the large electronic equipment market reaching EGP 32 billion, while the volume of TV sales reached EGP 15bn. The figures indicate that the volume of small appliance sales recorded about EGP 4 billion.

Tolba’s remarks came on the sidelines of a press conference to launch the first shopping center specialized in wholesale mobile accessories and devices in Egypt, at Arkadia Mall. The center was launched by the Association of Mobile Accessories Importers (under establishment) with investments estimated at EGP 100m.

He also said that global mobile market sales recorded $450 billion during 2020, with the mobile accessories sales making $60 billion.

“The mobile market in Egypt declined by between 4%-5% during 2020, as the volume of sales of smartphones and accessories reached about EGP 47bn,” Tolba said, “The number of phones sold annually reached 19.5m units.”

He also said that the volume of sales in Egypt’s phone market represents nearly 50% of the total electronics market, amounting to about EGP 96bn.

The Association of Mobile Accessories Importers includes the largest wholesalers and importers specializing in mobile accessories. It is represented by the delegated committee, including: Essam Badr El Din, Head of the Communications and Mobile Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce; Ahmed Wahdan, Chairperson of Cell Tel Import, the owner company of Cactus and Cell Tel; and Hisham Abo Salama, owner of Trust Mobile Accessories Company.
