Egypt recently ranked within the top 10 most competitive countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in Coursera’s third annual Global Skills Report.

The report is an in-depth look at the state of skills globally, using performance data from over 77 million learners on Coursera to benchmark business, technology, and data skills proficiency for over 100 countries.

The Global Skills Report covers the domains of Business, Technology, and Data Science.

Egypt placed 5th in the region, and 53rd overall, with the UAE leading the MENA group.

“A country’s placement on Coursera’s skills index is highly correlated (0.74) with the World Bank’s Human Capital Index, 28 which accounts for areas such as healthcare outcomes, years of basic schooling, and labor force participation in high productivity jobs,” writes the report.

In terms of Business skills, Egypt ranked 47 overall globally and 7th in the MENA group, with an 88% score in communications, 88% in human resources, and 71% in terms of strategy and operations. The UAE is the 2nd globally in Business scores overall.

Egypt ranked 5th in the MENA group in technology, 61st globally, topping the MENA’s group with a 96% score in mobile development. The country also had high scores in software engineering (70%), web development (63%) and Theoretical Computer Science (57%).

According to Coursera, the MENA region showcases a “particular strength in Security Engineering, with nearly all countries ranking in the top half globally,” and mentions Egypt’s High Council for Cybersecurity as an example of MENA governments’ push to make cybersecurity a high priority.

Egypt ranked 2nd in the Data Science category regionwide and 49th globally, with the 2nd highest score in data visualization (85%) in the group. It also had high scores in data analytics (81%), mathematics (61%), and data management (54%).

“Data Visualization may be an under-tapped strength for the region, particularly in Northern Africa. Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria are all globally competitive in these skills,” the report pointed out, “The global data visualization market was valued at $2.99 billion in 2020 and expected to reach $5.17 billion by 2026.134.”
