Egypt is exploring plans with Heka Data and a US consortium of data center developers to establish an integrated hub for hyperscale data centers and artificial intelligence, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said.
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hindi met with a delegation from Heka Data, led by Chairman Ahmed El-Hefny, and representatives of the US consortium to discuss the proposed project and investment opportunities in Egypt.
The project is envisioned as a large-scale platform supporting data centers, cloud computing, AI and digital services, with the parties reviewing its preliminary size, implementation phases and potential investment and technology opportunities.
Discussions focused on Egypt’s strategic geographic location and digital infrastructure, including fiber-optic networks and submarine cables connecting the country to global markets, as well as its growing pool of ICT talent.
Hindi said Egypt is seeking international partnerships with specialized companies in data centers and digital infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of attracting investments that bring advanced technologies and support the development of data center and AI capabilities.
He added that the rapid expansion of AI is driving rising demand for high-capacity digital infrastructure, with Egypt working to develop an environment capable of supporting data processing, cloud services and other advanced digital applications for domestic and regional markets.
Heka Data and the US consortium presented their vision for implementing the project and expressed interest in working with the Egyptian government to complete the studies and procedures required to move forward.
The meeting also examined ways to facilitate the project and coordinate with relevant government entities, as well as opportunities for job creation and supporting the growth of cloud computing, AI and digital services in Egypt and the wider region.
The discussions also highlighted the need to integrate data center infrastructure with reliable energy supplies to ensure efficient and continuous operations, amid growing global demand for data centers driven by cloud computing and AI adoption.
The meeting was attended by National Telecom Regulatory Authority CEO Mohamed Shamroukh, IT Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) CEO Ahmed El-Zaher, and representatives of the ministry, NTRA and Telecom Egypt.
