President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has called for expanding economic and technological cooperation between Egypt and China, including attracting Chinese investments in electric vehicles, battery storage, renewable energy, electronics and shipbuilding.
In an article published by the Middle East News Agency (MENA) marking the 70th anniversary of Egypt-China diplomatic relations, El-Sisi said Egypt and China should capitalize on their respective development strategies to expand industrial cooperation and technology transfer.
He highlighted opportunities to attract more Chinese industries to Egypt, particularly in sectors aligned with the country’s industrial localization strategy and China’s push for high-quality development.
El-Sisi also identified telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI) and space science as priority areas for technology transfer and future bilateral cooperation.
China has become a major trade and economic partner for Egypt, with Chinese companies involved in several major infrastructure projects, including the Central Business District in the New Administrative Capital, the electric train to the 10th of Ramadan City, renewable energy projects and port development.
The president said Chinese investment in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) has also expanded, benefiting from Egypt’s strategic location and the zone’s industrial and investment opportunities.
El-Sisi said Egypt’s infrastructure development has strengthened its position as a potential global logistics and industrial hub, creating opportunities for further Chinese manufacturing investments.
The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1956, making Egypt the first Arab and African country to establish relations with the People’s Republic of China. Their ties were elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2014.
El-Sisi also highlighted Egypt’s growing engagement with China through multilateral platforms, including BRICS, the New Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, as part of Cairo’s efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation and diversify its international partnerships.
The article comes as President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is scheduled to receive Chinese President Xi Jinping today as part of the latter’s official visit to Egypt.
Egyptian Presidency spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy said the visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations across political, economic, and development fields; follow up on the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed in 2014; and discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest.
