A preliminary investigation by Egypt’s relevant authorities has found that a drone caused the fire involving two vessels at Damietta Port on Wednesday, the Cabinet said in a statement on Thursday.
The Cabinet said no party has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
It added that investigations are still underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, identify its repercussions, and take the necessary measures to protect Egypt’s interests and national security.
The incident involved a regasification vessel and a storage vessel at Damietta Port, according to an earlier statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. The ministry said the fire caused no casualties.
Authorities responded immediately under approved emergency and rapid response plans, with firefighting teams, on-site security personnel, and relevant bodies moving to contain the situation.
Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi travelled to the site shortly after the incident to follow up on response efforts, ensure safety procedures were being implemented, and coordinate with the concerned authorities until the situation was safely contained.
The ministry said emergency teams are continuing to work with the relevant technical bodies to complete the required procedures and assess the consequences of the incident.
It also urged media outlets and social media users to rely only on official statements for information, stressing that further updates will be issued as developments emerge.
