The agreements include engineering, procurement, and construction contracts for the Horus standalone battery storage project, with a capacity of 500 MWh at the Zafarana site, and the Nefertiti standalone battery storage project, with a capacity of 1,000 MWh at the Benban site.
Al Nowais, Gotion, China Energy, and CEIG have signed agreements to develop two separate battery energy storage stations with a combined capacity of 1,500 MWh in Zafarana and Benban, as well as a factory to produce battery energy storage systems with an annual capacity of 3,000 MWh.

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, said battery storage systems were introduced last year for the first time in the history of Egypt’s national electricity grid. He noted that expanding reliance on solar and wind energy under the national energy strategy requires further investment in battery storage to ensure grid security and sustainable power supply.
Speaking on the sidelines of the signing ceremony, Esmat added that Egypt has specific implementation projects with clear timelines to increase energy storage battery capacity to 14,320 MWh by 2028.
