Egypt provides EGP 129B to develop ports over past 10 years

The cost of developing Egyptian sea ports amounted to EGP 129 billion during the period from 2014 to 2024, as part of the comprehensive plan to enhance the global competitiveness of the ports, according to a report released by the Cabinet.

According to the report, one of the key projects in this development plan was the upgrade of the Greater Alexandria Port, which included the construction of the Tahya Misr" multi-purpose terminal at a cost of 7 billion pounds, with a capacity ranging from 12 to 15 million tons annually.

 Additionally, three main routes were established to link the Alexandria Port with the Abu Zikri axis (Tameer axis), along with the creation of dock 3/85, extending 433 meters, and a fully integrated logistics station for the handling and storage of grains at the dock.

The development projects also included the East Port Said Port, with the construction of 8.4 km of berths, while the third phase of the project is currently underway, with an additional 6.2 km of berths under construction.

Furthermore, the Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) was established, and the first green fuel refueling operation for ships in Africa and the Middle East took place on August 22, 2023.

The development plan also covered the Red Sea ports, including the development of Nuweiba Port, which cost 463 million pounds.

 In addition, the Safaga Port was upgraded, including the creation of a model warehouse covering 5,900 square meters at a cost of 41 million pounds, the establishment of heavy truck yards at a cost of 34.5 million pounds, and the construction of a 65-meter-long dock at a cost of 65 million pounds.

At Sokhna Port, five basins were dredged to a depth of 19 meters, along with the construction of 18 km of berths, 3,300 meters of wave barriers, 17 km of internal roads, and 30 km of railways.

Meanwhile, at Damietta Port, a multi-purpose terminal with 680 meters of berths was constructed at a cost of 1.4 billion pounds.

 The eastern barrier was also upgraded with an addition of 1,425 meters, and the western barrier is currently under construction with a length of 4,440 meters, at a cost of 3.4 billion pounds.
