The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company signed a cooperation agreement with the UAE-based K&K to carry out the final studies for the electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Europe via Italy, using subsea cables.

The agreement covers preparing and implementing the final technical, environmental, and financial studies for the project.

The collaboration also will take the necessary measures to begin executing the interconnection between Egypt’s national electricity grid and the unified European electricity network through Italy.

The signing comes as part of a work strategy aimed at strengthening Egypt’s position as a regional energy hub, supporting efforts to export clean energy to European markets, and expanding electricity interconnection projects with neighboring countries—especially with Europe—thus helping transform Egypt into a central node for energy transfer and exchange among Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, affirmed that the signing of this agreement reflects the state’s interest in electricity interconnection projects with Europe and in maximizing the utilization of natural resources, particularly renewable energy sources.

He described the agreement as an important step toward bolstering Egypt’s status as a regional energy center.

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, stated that the interconnection project with Europe is considered one of the strategic initiatives for exporting surplus renewable energy generated in Egypt to Europe, targeting a capacity of up to 3,000 MW.

This, he said, will support energy transition efforts, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance regional and international energy security.

The minister also emphasized the great importance that the electricity and renewable energy sector places on expanding the use of clean energy, reducing carbon emissions, and diversifying energy sources.

He noted that the state’s strategy aims to increase the contribution of renewables in the electricity mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
