The National Authority for Tunnels has signed three contracts with Spain’s CAF company to maintain and upgrade trains operating on Cairo Metro Lines 1 and 2.

The agreements include a contract for the maintenance of 23 trains on Line 1, in addition to two contracts covering the modernization, rehabilitation, and maintenance of 39 trains on Line 2.

Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Transport and Industry, said the contracts are part of Egypt’s comprehensive plan to upgrade the Greater Cairo Metro network. He explained that the rehabilitation and maintenance works will enhance the efficiency of trains that have been in service since the 1990s by modernizing traction, control, air-conditioning, and ventilation systems, extending their operational life by more than 20 additional years.

He added that the signed contracts also cover a 10-year comprehensive maintenance program for 62 trains across both lines, aimed at ensuring sustainable operations, boosting reliability and quality, and reducing daily breakdowns.

According to the minister, all rehabilitation and overhaul works will be carried out in Egypt at the Tora and Shubra workshops, financed through the National Authority for Tunnels’ budget in Egyptian pounds.

The agreements also include localizing the manufacturing of components and spare parts in Egypt through collaboration between CAF and the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operations, with full commitment to quality standards and the agreed timelines.
