Egypt will be constructing a new bioethanol project in Damietta Port, states Minster of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tarek El-Molla.

El-Molla added that the project's production will contribute to securing local needs, reduce import needs, export surplus, as well as creating direct and indirect job opportunities.

The project’s investment cost is said to be $100 million, with a planned annual capacity of 100,000 tons.

Bioethanol is used in several industries such as paint and ink formulation and antiseptic production.

The announcement came during the Egyptian Company for Bioethanol’s constitutive general assembly that was headed by the minister.

The project is in line with the ministry's vision of increasing the economic return, achieving optimal utilization of available resources, in addition to developing value-added projects and sustainable development, El- Molla added.

In early March, Minister El-Molla stated that urgent plans had been put in place to expedite the implementation of major refining projects, and compensate for the delays in supplying some equipment and raw materials from abroad during the past year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
