The Egyptian government is set to invest over 10 billion Egyptian pounds in a new atmospheric distillation project at the Assiut Refinery, located south of Cairo. The project is expected to be completed by 2027.

According to a government official statement to Ashraq Bloomberg, the new unit will significantly increase the refinery's capacity to produce petroleum products, including butane gas, which is crucial for meeting the growing demand in Upper Egypt. The refinery's annual output is projected to reach 5 million tons of crude oil, with a portion sourced domestically and the remainder imported.

The expansion aims to modernize the existing Assiut Refinery, which currently produces diesel and operates at a capacity of 4.5 million tons. Egypt's annual diesel and gasoline consumption stands at 12 million tons and 6.7 million tons respectively. The government hopes the new refinery will help reduce the country's reliance on imported fuel.

Egypt currently operates 12 refineries with a combined capacity of 34 million tons, though only 25 million tons are utilized annually.
