Egypt’s Manufacturing and Extractive index saw a 0.7 percent decline in January 2021, states Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
The manufacturing and extractive industries index, which excludes crude oil and petroleum products, reached 99.59 (primary data) during January 2021, compared to 100.32 during December 2020 (final), reflecting a decrease of 0.7 percent.
Food product manufacturing reached 145.20 during January 2021, compared to the 119.57 reported in December 2020, reflecting an increase of 21.44 percent.
This is due to the increasing demand for food products with the advent of the blessed month of Ramadan, which is less than 15 days away.
Computer, electronics, and optical products reached 85.00 during January 2021, compared to the 72.53 reported in December 2020, an increase of 17.19 percent.
This rise can be attributed to the raised demands for medical devices due to the on-going pandemic.
Paper and related products reached 54.89 during January 2021, compared to 58.80 in December 2020, reflecting a decrease of 6.65 percent.
According to CAPMAS, this was driven by the increased reliance on imported paper and the suspension of studies with the commensurate focus on digital learning.
The manufacture of electrical equipment reached 96.57 during January 2021, compared to the 106.19 recorded in December 2020, reflecting a decrease by 9.06% due to the market conditions.
The CAPMAS data was reported in a press release of primary data of manufacturing and extractive industries of production index of January 2021.
The agency has updated the index methodology using 2012/13 as a base year and the level of main indices of industrial activity according to Industrial Activity Manual (ISIC Rev.4) and the monthly index for producer prices based on 2012/2013.
