Egyptian Imports from China Plummet in 2023, Reflecting Economic Shifts

Egypt's trade relationship with China experienced a downturn in 2023, as data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics reveals a significant decrease in Egyptian imports from the East Asian giant compared to the previous year. This decline, spanning various commodity groups, reflects evolving economic dynamics and trade patterns between the two nations.

Egyptian imports from China experienced a notable decline last year, 2023, compared to the same period in the previous year, 2022, according to data from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.

Total Egyptian imports from China reached approximately $12.941 billion by the end of 2023, whereas they stood at about $14.764 billion in the previous year, 2022, marking a decrease of $1.822 billion. This decline was driven by the decrease in Egyptian imports of several commodity groups during that period.

Machinery and electrical appliances topped the list of declining goods in 2023, with a value of about $2.618 billion, compared to $3.069 billion in 2022, marking a decrease of $451.688 million. Following this, Egypt's imports of boilers, machinery, and mechanical appliances amounted to $1.905 billion in 2023, while they were $2.154 billion in 2022, marking a decrease of $249.640 million.

The list of declining goods also included imports of synthetic fibers, valued at $1.117 billion in 2023, compared to $1.123 billion in 2022, marking a decrease of $6.153 million. Additionally, imports of cars and tractors amounted to $486.989 million in 2023, compared to $634.578 million in 2022, marking a decrease of $147.589 million. Finally, imports of iron and steel reached $661.328 million in 2023, compared to $625.100 million in 2022, marking a decrease of $36.228 million.
