MoIC signs €61.5M financing agreements with AFD & EU for water treatment

Minister of International Cooperation (MoIC), Rania Al-Mashat, signed a financing agreement with the French Development Agency (AFD) amounting to € 50 million, alongside a grant agreement of €1.5 million, according to a statement issued by MoIC.

Additionally, she witnessed the signing of a €10 million grant agreement between the European Union (EU) and the AFD.

This combined funding of €61.5 million aims to support the implementation of the third phase of the Al Gabal Al Asfar wastewater Treatment Plant and bolster climate change adaptation efforts.

Furthermore, water projects comprising 20% of the development cooperation portfolio, Al-Mashat added.

According to MoIC, the third phase increases the plant’s treatment capacity by about one million cubic meters per day and it will provide its services to 17.5 million citizens by 2040.

The station operates through the use of tertiary treatment technology to provide water suitable for irrigation and generate biogas to provide 80% of the station’s electricity needs.

During the period from 2020 to 2023, the MoIC signed several agreements in the field of sustainable management of water resources, housing, and sanitation, amounting to $1.7 billion, the report added.
