Egypt is set to host a workshop organized by the European Union titled "Dialogue on Sustainable Food Systems: From Production to Consumption" on May 10-11, 2023, in Cairo.

The workshop is of significant importance given that climate change, loss of biodiversity, land degradation, and ocean deterioration pose an existential threat, as they rapidly lead to soil depletion, severe weather events, and malnutrition.

The workshop brings together key experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from the EU, Egypt, and neighboring countries to discuss "sustainable and resilient food systems."

The dialogue session aims to exchange views to find common ground, principles, and actions, with a view to advancing regional cooperation and enhancing it. Specifically, discussions will focus on how the EU and southern neighboring countries (Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Jordan, and Lebanon) can unite their forces to move towards sustainable and resilient food systems.

The workshop will discuss the main topics of soil health, sustainable fertilizer use, innovation in the food sector, sustainable pesticide use, food loss and waste, and sustainable consumption. This is the sixth workshop funded by the EU project "From Farm to Fork."

The three topics will enable the diverse stakeholders in the food systems field to identify strategies, policies, and practices that can lead to different levels of the desired change.

The presentations by speakers from Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Jordan, and Lebanon will be followed by a panel discussion on existing or expected synergies between approaches that can pave the way for cooperation, including how this cooperation can support this transition at the global level.

As part of the Green Deal, the EU has proposed ambitious measures and commitments to transform the region's food system, thus providing opportunities for cooperation with neighboring countries.

The EU's "From Farm to Fork" strategy, unveiled in 2020, aims to make the EU's food system healthier, fairer, and more sustainable. The strategy is a key component of the European Green Deal, the EU's flagship initiative to transition to a climate-neutral, resource-efficient economy.
