Around 100k Egyptian expats registered on the tax-free car import for expats initiative’s digital platform within 48 hours of its launch last week, revealed Minister of Finance, Mohamed Maait.

The initiative, which aims to “facilitate the import of cars for personal use for Egyptians residing abroad,” started on November 15 and will end on March 14 2023.

Under the initiative, Egyptians, who have valid residence permits abroad and bank accounts, have the right to import one private passenger car for their personal use without paying fees or customs taxes for four months.

Head of the Customs Authority, Al-Shahat Ghaturi, stated that the Customs Authority is keen to provide all possible customs facilities, in accordance with the law, and to simplify procedures to ensure the expansion of the base of beneficiaries of the initiative.

He added that in the event of a ban on opening a bank account in any country, after obtaining a notarized certificate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, individuals can transfer from an individual’s bank account in any other country to Egypt, stressing that there is no import approval when managing the cash amount due from inside Egypt.

The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology launched the initiative’s app on Wednesday, November 16 on both Android and Apple stores.

After downloading the app, users must register their accounts using their mobile phone numbers and personal information including their national ID number and Egyptian passport number.

Users then submit a request to import a car for personal use, specifying the brand, model year, and motor type, as well as the country of residence. The app will then calculate the fees required.

The app also mentions the documents required to finalize the import process, including valid residence permits in a different country and bank accounts opened abroad that are at least three months old.

Egypt is looking to attract EGP 50 billion worth of foreign currency through the initiative.
